The Spencer Family
Hello! We are an English family working with the church in France for over fifteen years
Here’s our story:
Mike and Donna Spencer both felt a call on their lives to work in a full-time capacity for the LORD from before they were married in 1987. They actually embarked on the missionary life in 1995 leaving a house and good secular employment, Mike as a Chartered Building Surveyor and Donna as a Care Assistant. By this time they had two children, Luke (1989) and Jonathan (1991).
The LORD pust a call on their live to work in France, with the French church. This has taken them several years to work into this role. Initially they joined Youth with a Mission and did some training in Lausanne, Switzerland and a short term outreach into Albania.
Subsequently they helped staff a School of Worship in Hyderabad, India.
The following year, 1997 saw them move full time to France where they worked on a YWAM base at Le Gault le Fôret, in the Champagne region in the North of France. Here they acclimatised and became integrated into the French “system”, the children especially, learning French in a small village school. Most of this time was spent leading worship for bilingual “schools”, and doing practical work around the many base houses.
In 1999 the Spencer family moved to Albertville to learn French formally at the the “Centre d’Enseignement du Français” in Albertville, Savoie in the French Alps. During this time they were asked to remain in Albertville after their studies to work with the local Assemblies of God church.
After two years here helping as best they could working in the areas of worship and evangelism they moved on to the Evangelical Protestant Church also in Albertville. Here they developed more contacts and assisted with the music and helped for a few months with a church plant further up the valley at Bourg St Maurice.
During all this time Mike and Donna were also heavily involved in passing on their talents (worship/music) to other missionaries who were passing through the language schools destined for other French speaking nations, largely in West Africa.
With now good contacts in two churches in the town, and a heart to see the local churches working together Mike and Donna then went to work with a small house church that had been recently started on the outskirts of Albertville in the village of Grignon. This was in 2003.
During 2006 Mike and Donna were lead by God to be involved in a pioneering church planting situation in the neighbouring Maurienne valley. This valley of 43 000 people had one small Baptist church with a handful of members in one small town and a small group of “Reformed” Christians that met once a month midweek.
In 2007 Mike and Donna moved into the main town of the valley, St Jean de Maurienne where they rent an appartment. This enabled them to be far more integrated in the life of the developing new church. The church has now taken on legal status as an association, something necessary for any regular gathering of people in France, and is called “La Source” – an apt name in what is known as a spiritual desert, and in a mountainous region. In 2013 Mike and Donna relinquished their leadership role in the “La Source” church…
